Nothing quite like being cooped up inside all winter to make you want to transform your home!

Many homeowners shy away from tackling painting projects in the colder season but winter can actually be an ideal time to refresh your interiors.

The importance of winter preparation

The colder months do bring some unique preparations, especially when it comes to painting. For one, the home has to be heated so the paint adheres to the walls and dries properly, making winter an ideal time for indoor painting but less suitable for outdoor painting.

During the warming months, your walls swell, but in the cooler months your walls will contract. This is a great time to fill in any holes or imperfections on the walls. Address these concerns before you begin painting to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish.

It's also a good idea to check for drafts around windows and doors, as these can affect paint drying times and overall results.

Dry winter dries paint faster

Winter brings dry air, which can actually be beneficial for painting projects. However, you'll need to strike a balance between humidity and temperature for optimal results.

Check your thermostat, we’re aiming for an indoor humidity level of 40-50%. If your home is too dry, consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the air.  This will help prevent the paint from drying too quickly or cracking.

Temperature is another crucial factor. Ideally, maintain an indoor temperature between 50°F and 70°F (10°C to 21°C) during the painting process and for at least 24 hours afterward for optimal results.

Choose the healthiest paints for indoor environments

Seeing as you can’t paint with the windows open, consider using a low or no-VOC paint to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals. These paints often have better coverage and are safe for indoor use with limited ventilation.

Weatherproofing windows and doors

Take some time to weatherproof your windows and doors. This step will help maintain a consistent temperature in your home and prevent paint from cracking near the windows.

Let the air circulate

Use a fan to gently circulate air in the room, which can help speed up the drying process. Don’t rush before applying a second coat.

Exterior paint considerations

While this guide focuses on interior painting, it's worth noting that exterior painting should generally be avoided during winter months in colder climates.
